Kane County Hospital Healing Arts Exhibit

The Kane County Hospital and the Kanab Arts Council sponsor a rotating art exhibit at the hospital to allow heavy hearts a brief rest. Many exhibits are heritage related with past exhibit of Navajo baskets, John Wesley Powell images and much more. National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo

Western Legends Roundup

The Western Legends Roundup celebrates Kane County’s western movie heritage. Slickrock String Band

Since 1978, Doug and Terry Griffin have spent their free time traveling around the United States learning and sharing Old-Time music, its fascinating history and traditions, and developing and sharing skills on their instruments. Doug & Terry relocated to Southern Utah in 1997 and performed as a duo for local tourist functions. In 1998 they added a rhythm guitarist to the band and became the Slickrock String Band. Dolls By Patsy

The Terrace Outdoor Performing Art Center

The Terrace will be completed in Summer 2012 and will host a wide range of outdoor performing events. An ongoing tradition for more than 25 years will be Kanab’s Wednesday Night free performances by local artists. The site will also host DOCUTAH, Southern Utah’s Documentary Film Festival and performances for Jacob Hamblin Days, the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo and Western Legends. Symphony of the Canyons

From early days, bands have been part of Kane County’s heritage. For the past 25 years, the Symphony of the Canyons has brought a different kind of music to county residents. Crescent Moon Theater

Since its opening, The Crescent Moon has provided musical entertainment, cowboy poetry, talent shows, theater and dance productions, and film events in Kanab. The Crescent Moon has hosted, Folk, County and Western and Bluegrass bands such as Brenn Hill, Eric Dodge, The Bar G Wranglers, Latigo and Juniper621. Joy of Wood

Juniper Fine Arts Gallery

The Juniper Fine Arts Gallery is located in the basement of the Kanab Heritage Museum. From May to September, the Gallery hangs exhibits featuring the works of local artists and artisans. Many of these works present heritage themes. Of special interest to heritage tourists would be the Western Legends Arts Roundup during August’s Western Legends Roundup. Maynard Dixon Summer Home and Studio

Maynard Dixon was one of the best known of the early 20th Century’s painters of the American West and the Native American culture. B In the late 1930, he wrote a friend, “Big news is we are going to quit Calif. & build us a log house in Utah, far from any large town. Mormons are simple honest farming people. We like them. Beautiful country, but cold in winter. Don’t know if we can make a living there, but take a gamblers chance.” In 1937, he and his wife Edith Hamblin, an accomplished muralist, moved to Mt. Carmel where they built their new summer home and studio. Now owned by the Thunderbird Foundation, visitors can tour this wonderful homestead now used largely as an artist’s retreat. Bingham Art Gallery

Mt. Carmel’s Bingham Gallery hangs and sells the works of many of the American West’s greatest artists. The Binghams specialize in the work of Maynard Dixon. They also periodically exhibit one of two existing collections of photographs taken by Jack Hillers, photographer for the John Wesley Powell Expedition, of Native American cultures. The Rafters Gallery

Located upstairs in the Rocking V Café is the Rafters Gallery. The building in which the gallery is located is a local historic icon in that it was the old Bowman Merchantile and the location of Kanab’s first mortuary. Rafters Gallery offers a wide range of contemporary art, jewelry, ceramics and other artistic offerings by local and regional artists and artisans. Of particular interest to the heritage tourist will be the work of Gary Kalpakoff, a black and white photographer specializing in ranch life and historic buildings.
